Winter Lawn Care
by Scott YoungWinter lawn care will vary from region to region. In many parts of the north, there are now lawn, just snow! Still, there are things that you can do to prepare your lawn to survive the brutal cold so that it will be ready for the next beautiful growing season. In southern regions, the weather still gets cold, but if treated properly your lawn can maintain a lush green color throughout the winter time. First of all, no matter where you live you should always remove all leaves and debris from your lawn. This is important for winter lawn care so that this debris does not breakdown or decompose on your lawn and cause possible fungus or other lawn disease problems. On warm weather grasses, there are certain winterizing agents that can be used on your lawn to help maintain a lush, green color during the winter time. Mix up x-x-x solution of miracle grow in a large contain and according to the instructions on the box. Now use the miracle grow solution and warm water, apply evenly across your lawn with a hose feeder sucking out the miracle grow. This type of treatment can be done once or twice a week, but do not do it during freezing weather. Using this winter lawn care treatment can help you maintain your lawn green without having to overseed with rye grass seed. Watering should still be practiced during the winter months on warm weather grasses. Once or twice a week should be sufficient and always try to do your watering early in the morning or early afternoon. Watering is especially important if you are fertilizing. Winter lawn care for northern lawns should also include removing of all debris before snowfall. Also, fertilization should be practiced in the fall as opposed to the winter so to avoid freezing temperatures. For northern grasses, winter lawn care should include a healthy application of a fertilizer with a high iron and nitrogen content. A 16-20-0 is a good mix. This iron helps the roots stay well established and helps prepare the soil for the next spring season. Some lawn care experts will recommend fast releasing nitrogen for winter and slow release nitrogen for the summer time. Quick release nitrogen turns to burn in warmer weather. The soil can better absorb the quick release in the cool winter soil. One more thing to look for in the north is the use of salt to melt ice on the driveways, roads, and sidewalks. This salt can cause problems and turn the edges of your lawn brown. Try using sand or kitty litter instead, if this is practical for you. Even though there may be less weeds in the winter, still make sure to keep up with removing the weed that do pop up, so they do not choke out your slower growing lawn. Another part of winter lawn care for northern and southern grasses is to areate your lawn. This is usually done in late winter, but before spring when you fertilize. Proper winter lawn care will help keep your lawn maintained and possibly looking green all year long; if you don't get snow in your area!
