Summer Lawn Care
by Scott YoungSummer lawn care. Ouch! Your lawn sprinkler better be working properly because your lawn can burn up in a couple of days without the proper lawn water care. If you don't have an automatic sprinkler system then be prepared to drag out the hose and keep up with the water demands of your lawn. Most residential lawns will require between 1&1/2 inches and 2 inches of water per week. Hey, it's fun to play in the sprinklers during the summer time, so don't worry! Start off by adjusting your sprinklers so that they are watering your lawn evenly and precisely. Next, make sure that you are watering at the optimum time, which is early in the morning, or the next best time is early in the afternoon. When watering in the summer, if you water your lawn at night in you are opening the possibility to lawn funguses and lawn diseases that could quickly overtake your lawn. If you must water in the afternoon, then do so after 3:00PM and finish all watering before the sun goes down, so the water has time to dry. In contrast, if you water your lawn during the middle of the day, you take the risk of burning your grass blades. The reflection between the hot summer sun and water droplets are bad news for your lawn. You will end up loosing a lot more water to evaporation. The best way to care for this is to water between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM. Make sure you water as deep and long as possible for your soil type. This will encourage deep root growth for your lawn. The amount of time you can water will vary depending on your soil type. Clay soils have a lower permeability rate than sandy soils and therefore can not accept water as fast. Another summer lawn care precaution is to cut your lawn slightly higher than usual. This will help protect the roots of your lawn and reduce water evaporation. As far as fertilization goes, this should have been done during your spring lawn care maintenance. Fertilizing in the summer can be overkill and will only produce more mowing, weed pulling, and work to do. The next fertilization should be done in the fall the prepare your lawn for the winter. Summer lawn care is all about keeping up with your regular maintenance, watering, and mowing routine. Stay on top of and correct water problems early and you will maintain your healthy lawn throughout the harsh summer months.
