In September 2000, Carnival Cruise Lines inaugurated cruise ship service from the Port of Galveston, Texas with its four- and five-day sailings on the Celebration to Calica/Playa del Carmen and Cozumel, Mexico.

These sailings proved to be such a smashing success that Royal Caribbean jumped into the fray in October 2001 with seven-day voyages to Key West, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel on the Rhapsody of the Seas.

New great ships and itineraries

In August 2002, another Carnival ship, the Jubilee, began plying its trade in the Gulf of Mexico from Galveston, and in November 2002, Royal Caribbean's Splendour of the Seas introduced ten and eleven nights cruises to Central America and the Western Caribbean. Carnival also recently announced that the Elation will begin operating seven-day cruises from Galveston starting in September 2003.
