Centipede Grass

by Scott Young

Centipede grass is a very affordable and commonly used grass in south-eastern part of the country. One of the main benefits of centipede grass is that it is a relatively low maintenance grass.

This grass grows best in full sun, but can tolerate moderate amounts of shade.

The main downfalls of centipede grass are that it has a slow growth rate, it quickly goes dormant in the winter, and is not very durable and not meant for a lot of traffic.

So if you are thinking of installing a lawn for your kids, you might want to look towards a grass like St. Augustine.

Some other cons of centipede grass are that it can easily be burned by excess fertilizer and lack of water. Centipede grass will quickly green up in the spring after a normal watering schedule is established

Other types of residential grasses require more maintenance and are more expensive than centipede, but may be worth it depending on your particular grass uses.

If you are looking to save money, don't have a lot of traffic on our lawn, and don't want to keep up with a lot of maintenance and live in the correct region, then centipede grass could be the choice for you.
